It’s official and sensational: Jack White‘s June-released album Lazaretto is the #1 selling vinyl release in 2014 with 86,707 copies in the U.S., and over 150,000 copies worldwide. Moreover, it posted the highest one-year vinyl sales of Soundscan era, starting 1991.
Also, 40,000 copies sold in the seven days following its June 10 release made for Lazaretto’s highest first-week vinyl numbers since the launch of Soundscan.
Being nominated for three Grammy awards for Best Alternative Music Album, as well as Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance for its title track, Lazaretto proved to be one of the most successful releases of the outgoing year. That could mean only one – vinyl sales industry is alive and well. Probably, in 2015 more and more artists will focus their attention on the vinyl record releases, and more fans will buy physical copies of their favorite albums instead of just clicking “Download.” The spiral of history repeats once again.
