WATCH: Peter Hook, Billy Corgan, And Jeff Schroeder Perform “Love Will Tear Us Apart”

Ex-New Order bassist Peter Hook and his new band performed Joy Division classic, “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” with Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan and Jeff Schroeder.

Spin reported on November 17th at the Metro Cabaret in Chicago, former New Order bassist and his new band, Peter Hook and the Light, performed classic Joy Division song “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” with a little help from Chicago natives Billy Corgan and Jeff Schroeder.

The Smashing Pumpkins’ Corgan and Schroeder assisted Hook in performing the crowd-favorite Joy Division song. Although Corgan’s vocals are a bit drowned out by the excited fans, the video is good enough to satisfy both Smashing Pumpkins and Joy Division fans alike.

Peter Hook and the Light performed two New Order albums at the Metro Cabaret, 1985’s Low Life and 1986’s Brotherhood. Although New Order reformed back in 2011 without inviting Peter Hook to join, Hook still performs the classic New Order albums. The dispute between Hook and the rest of New Order has gone so far as sparking lawsuits between the two parties over the use of the New Order brand and trademark.

2013 saw Peter Hook in another legal dispute with Julia Adamson, who found lost Joy Division tapes. Unfortunately, the tapes have yet to be returned with their rightful owners.

Peter Hook and the Light began in 2010, and features Hook’s son Jack Bates, on bass, Andy Poole, on keyboard, Paul Kehoe on drums, and David Potts on guitar. The band often plays the two Joy Division albums, Unknown Pleasures and Closer, and New Order albums Power, Corruption & Lies, and Movement.

The band has released one EP, 1102/2011, on Hacienda Records, which features four Joy Division covers, and one unreleased Joy Division song, “Pictures In My Mind.”

Smashing Pumpkins front man Billy Corgan fell in love with Joy Division and New Order in high school, and has maintained a relationship with Peter Hook, performing “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” in Chicago in 2011, and touring with New Order for a summer back in 2001.

Smashing Pumpkins currently consists of Corgan and guitarist Jeff Schroeder, and the band recently released their latest album Monuments of An Elegy, released December 9th, and played select tour dates with Rage Against the Machine and Mike Stoermer of The Killers. Corgan also recently wrote play about ancient Greece called “Pretty Persephone,” which was performed at Music Theatre Company of Highland Park in Chicago.

Peter Hook and the Light recently wrapped up their fall North American tour, and are releasing a box set of the band performing the Hebden Bridge Residency, which can be purchased on the band’s website.
