The Sword is an American heavy metal band from right here in Austin, Texas that formed in 2003 . The band consists of John Cronise (guitar/vocals), Kyle Shutt (guitar), Bryan Richie (bass), Santiago Vela III (drums). Their debut album, Age of Winters was released in 2006 on a New York based label, Kemado Records. Their follow up album, Gods of the Earth, was the mark of their initial breakthrough, and made their first appearance on the Billboard 200 chart.
In 2010, the band released Warp Riders, a concept album which focused on an original science fiction narrative. In 2012, they signed with a new label, Razor & Tie and released their fourth album Apocryphon, which was promoted with a worldwide headlining tour.
The Sword is commonly categorized as a doom metal or stoner metal band, and is heavily influenced by groups like Black Sabbath and Sleep. Conrise stated in an interview with entertainment newspaper, The A.V. Club, that bands like ZZ Top, Bob Segar, and Michael Jackson have also been influences on their sound.
