WATCH: Emmy The Great Releases New Video For “Swimming Pool” Featuring Tom Fleming

Emmy the Great comes back onto the scene with her newest EP, S, due out in January. She’s released a new video for “Swimming Pool,” the lead off track on her new EP.

What exactly makes Emmy the Great so great? Her ability to etherialize herself into her music videos. The video for “Swimming Pool” looks and feels a lot like the trailer for The Shining, sans the massive sea of blood that comes rushing out of an elevator. There’s something ominous and unnerving about the house and/or hotel that the video showcases. Adding to the creepiness is a hologram of Emmy sitting next to a swimming pool, looking despondent. As it turns out, some shady business has gone down in this house/hotel. Musically, “Swimming Pool” enhances the horror of the locale of the video, yet at the same time it creates some sort of soothing melancholy that allows the “big reveal” in the video to really have a big impact. The enchanting melody of “Swimming Pool” lures you in like a siren’s song, and just like the siren’s song, as evidenced by the video, the song bodes ill tides for the future.

The songs featured on Emmy the Great’s new EP goes in a more introspective direction than her previous work. “Swimming Pool” and the three other tracks featured on the EP will be available on January 26th. It will be the follow-up to her 2011 record, Virtue.
