Swans is an American experimental rock band that originally formed in 1982. Swans announced the fourth leg of a year-long world-wide tour celebrating the release of their two CD set, To Be Kind. The album is their third studio album since their reactivation by front man Michael Gira in 2010 after a 14 year hiatus.
Their first full length release, Filth, featured driving, choppy rhythms and abrasive drums. AllMusic critic, Ned Raggett stated, “early Swans really is like little else on the planet before or since”. Swans’ latest album, To Be Kind, in total is 122 minuets long (as long a movie).
Since their reformation, Gira maintained the intensity of their live shows, stating that it is both “soul-uplifting and body-destroying.” He has sometimes turned off the air conditioner before their performances to compare the show to that of a Native American sweat lodge.
