Regardless of whether you find hashtags irritating beyond belief or a fantastic new form of expression, there can be little doubt that Neighbourhood’s newest single, “#icanteven,” is utterly fantastic.

Who ever heard of a song that has a hashtag in the title? The Neighbourhood has single-handedly blown the door wide open for a new revolution in song titles in the twenty-first century, and the result from that bold proposition is amazing to say the least. While the song doesn’t sound all that different from other singles in the hip-hop genre, it does have that tinge of saddened funk that has all but disappeared from the genre. Combining a mix of both electro-organ funk and lyrics that evoke a man that has gone through a series of rough heartbreaks enough to turn their emotions into amazing music. There’s something about art that stems from catharsis that adds a layer of depth that isn’t possible to derive from any other source. It’s not as if The Neighbourhood hasn’t made tracks that sound as good as “#icanteven,” but it simply feels different.

The track will be available for a wider listening audience starting on Monday. The track will feature on an upcoming mix tape that will be available later on in the year.

Doug Farrell: Am I a hip old lady that can hip-hop, be-bop, dance 'til you drop, and yo-yo make a wicked hot cup of co-co? No, but I am a struggling twenty-eight year old writer who loves music and writing about music.
