Danish quartet Iceage released a new video this week for the track, “Against the Moon”, from their album, Plowing Into The Field Of Love.
Martin Masai Andersen and Kim Thue directed this new unsettling black and white video. “Against the Moon” takes a narrative approach that follows an older gentleman as he reflects on a series of sexual encounters. The man is played by legendary German actor, Dan van Husen, who is best known for his roles in Fellini’s Casanova and Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre, according to a press release about the music video. German actress Missa Blue and Welsh model Louis Backhouse in supporting roles as a seductive woman, and a slightly androgynous person dressed in what appears to be a leotard, respectively.
The music video narrative blurs the line between outright affirmation, or acceptance, and a feeling of repentance for past transgressions. It is reflective of the lyrics, which read: “Whatever I do/ I don’t repent/ I keep pissing against the moon.” Elias Bender Rønnenfelt’s lyrics could be interpreted as a disregard for the consequences of an action, because of a rebellious nature. If it is indeed about the disregard for consequences, the video coupled with the slow and steady music, will cause one to stop and reflect, if only for a moment. And, an alternate interpretation is that the lyrics serve to highlight the conflicting feelings that people face in their lives from time to time, when making decisions related to ‘the field of love.’
