John Zorn has released new song “Assassin’s Bay,” off his new album The John Zorn Song Project, which features vocals by Mike Patton, Sophia Rei, and Jesse Harris.
Faith No More 2.0 reported that composer John Zorn has released a new song “Assassin’s Bay,” off new his album The John Zorn Song Project, featuring Faith No More’s Mike Patton. The album was released on November 18th as a limited edition multi-vinyl seven inch.
The new album by John Zorn is a collaborative effort between a multitude of artists. The music was composed by John Zorn, and the lyrics were written by Sean Lennon, Mike Patton, Sofia Rei, and Jesse Harris. Patton, Rei, and Harris were on vocals, while the instrumentals were done by Marc Ribot, John Medeski, Kenny Wollosen, Trevor Dunn, Joey Baron, and Cyro Baptista.
The song “Assassin’s Bay” concludes the album, and it was written by Patton and Zorn, and sung by Patton, Sofia Rei, and Jesse Harris. The song starts with a light piano, and peaks with a distorted electric guitar solo, showing Zorn’s fondness for metal.
Some of the music on the John Zorn Song Project includes compositions originally written for the bands Naked City, Masada, and The Dreamers. The album also includes a 32 page book filled with pictures, lyrics, and other gems for the die hard fans of John Zorn.
Known for his multi-genre composition style, Horn began Naked City as a compositional workshop created to test the format of the rock band. Naked City was composed of musicians Bill Frisell, Fred Firth, Wayne Horvitz, Joey Baron, and eventually vocalist Mike Patton. The project started as rhythm and blues, and turned into hardcore rock.
In addition to composing over one hundred albums, concert peformances, and working with hundreds of musicians across all genres, Zorn also has his own label, Tzadik Records, which focuses on avant-garde and experimental music.
In a recent interview with NPR, John Zorn said,
“”I feel like there are messages, I feel like there are angels, I feel that there is a legacy and an energy. I feel that it’s possible to tap into that. I just don’t believe in ego that much. I don’t think it’s just me. I think you can even just talk about community. I could not do this music without these musicians. It’s about people. Music is about people for me. It’s not about sounds. It’s about people; it’s about putting people into challenging situations. And for me, challenges are opportunities.”
Zorn certainly creates a community in his new album The John Zorn Song Project, which features a multitude of musicians from all backgrounds. Mike Patton is the most famous name on the list, which will not only get Patton some new fans of John Zorn’s, but will also give John Zorn more exposure to the world of metal.
The new song “Assassin’s Bay” is sure bring together both fans of Mike Patton and John Zorn, and to create “community” of musicians that Zorn strives for.
