While U2 front man Bono recovers from bike accident injuries, the Tonight Show crew came up with their own solution in place of the band’s scheduled residency.
Due to an unexpected turn of events, U2 was forced to cancel their residency on The Tonight Show this week. In a statement released on the band’s official website, lead vocalist Bono sustained arm injuries in a “cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it.” The band promises to return to the Tonight Show stage following Bono’s full recovery.
In response to the situation, Jimmy Fallon and the rest of the Tonight Show crew thought up the perfect alternative.
“[In response to Bono’s accident] But the show must go on… So I was thinking, who do we get to come on the show? And then I realized we already have the best band in the world. The Roots are here every single night,” Fallon said.
Luckily, the show’s house band came to the rescue with their remarkable ability to cover pretty much every song imaginable. Along with Fallon donning Bono’s classic cap and sunglasses combination, the host proved his incredible knack for impressions with an energetic cover of U2’s “Desire” – even his harmonica solo was on point.
Guitar in hand, Fallon and the Roots offered an enthusiastic and extremely convincing performance of one of U2’s greatest hits. Watch for yourself below.
