Fans rejoice! Babes In Toyland have officially confirmed they will be performing together for the first time in years this February. Check out the details here.
Seminal punk rockers Babes In Toyland have announced a reunion show at The Roxy in Los Angeles on February 12, 2015. It will be the first live gig the band has played together for the past 18 years.
News of this reunion show shouldn’t come as much of a surprise for fans who have been following what the band has been up to in the past few months. We reported in September that the group had been rehearsing together for a possible reunion gig. Today, this rumor has been put to rest. Babes In Toyland are officially back on the scene.
Rumors started circulating about a possible band reunion when singer Kat Bjelland and bassist Maureen Herman talked to a Pasadena College radio station about wanting to write new material and play a few shows. They posted a photo soon after of them rehearsing songs in a room together.
It was revealed today that the band reunion actually came about after three former Google employees started an LLC they called Powersniff. The sole purpose of this group was to fund Babes In Toyland’s future.
Fans had speculated on the possibility of a reunion from the group for years before this. They officially stopped performing together in 2001, but this came as no major shock to the music world. The band had been mostly inactive since 1997, before announcing they were calling it quits in 2001.
Babes In Toyland have disbanded in some form more times than you can probably count on one hand. Herman left the band in 1996, and the band lost their record contract shortly after this event. She was replaced for about a year by Mickey Finn, who was then replaced in 1997 by the band’s original bassist Michelle Leon. In 1997 alone, the band broke up and reformed multiple times with different bassists. In 2000, they performed briefly with Jessie Farmer.
But that’s not even the end of this complicated saga. The band announced a series of shows, 2001’s The Last Tour, which would prove to be accurate. We didn’t hear anything from them since. Bjelland tried to perform under the name Babes In Toyland without Herman and drummer Lori Barbero, but the latter two nixed the name due to legal issues. Bjelland focused instead on her other band Katastrophy Wife.
Despite the revolving door of bassists and turmoil surrounding the band’s activities in the late 1990s, it looks like Babes In Toyland are ready to make another go at the band. In addition to this show at The Roxy, they say they’re excited to start working on new material and getting in front of fans.
Kat Bjelland says:
It was brought to my attention that not only do we have a lot of diehard fans from back in the day, but also a whole new generation of kids–my son Henry included– that were eager to see us live. I felt some kind of obligation for them to see us, too. But mainly, I just missed my girls and the feeling that comes from playing with them–visceral live therapy.
Tickets for the show go on sale starting November 21 at 10 a.m. PST.
