80s pop princesses The Bangles have announced the release of new album Ladies and Gentlemen… The Bangles! featuring previously unreleased demos and live recordings, out Thanksgiving Day.
80s pop rock band The Bangles are releasing new album Ladies and Gentleman…The Bangles! on Thanksgiving Day. The album, which was released on their label DownKiddie! Records, features a sixteen track collection of remastered demos and live recordings, handpicked by the band members.
The disc includes their debut single and all the tracks from their debut self-titled EP, produced by Ramones/Blondie producer Craig Leon. The tracks include performances by both original and current members including Susanna Hoffs, Debbi Peterson, Vicki Peterson, Michael Steele, and Annette Zilinskas. The disc features mostly tracks from the bands early days, back when they were called Bangs. Singer/guitarist Susanna Hoff stated,
“I feel a very special connection to our early recordings. The garage of my parents’ house was our musical laboratory, and we took all the flavors of our favorite bands and mixed up a concoction of jangly guitars, McCartney-inspired bass parts, grooves powered by punk energy, and harmonies galore!”
In 1980, The Bangles was formed by Hoff and the Peterson sisters in Los Angeles during the Paisley Underground music scene. They gained prominence when they went on tour Cindy Lauper and The English Beat. After releasing three studio albums, the band called it quits in 1988, and reformed in 1998 to record “Get the Girl,” which was featured in the movie Austin Power: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
The band’s latest studio album Sweetheart of the Sun was released in 2011, and the band toured throughout the US in support of it.
During the peak of the band’s career, they had a string of hit songs, two platinum records, and music written for them by Prince (“Manic Monday”.) As a group of a women in a pop band, The Bangles struggled to get respect from the media, but their commitment to their band twenty years later shows just how serious The Bangles are about their music. In regards to their new album, Hoffs stated, “These songs and recordings were our musical manifesto – all that mattered and inspired us, fueled by youthful energy, hope and blind ambition.”
Last December, the band played with other Paisley Underground bands The Dream Syndicate, The Three O’Clock, and Rain Parade at the Filmore in San Francisco and at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, which included a performance of hit song “Walk Like an Egyptian.”
Their latest album Ladies and Gentlemen… The Bangles! will be released on Thanksgiving Day, and features never before released early demos and recordings.
