A leaked Instagram caption incites inquiry into the future of hardcore punk band Refused.
Burning Heart Records veterans Refused may be coming out with a new album soon, even though they recently fired their guitarist, John Brannstrom, and have publicly released a letter titled “Refused Are Fucking Dead” in late 1998 when the original line up ceased ties.
Speculation about a reunion despite the extremely clear and rather abrasive letter started in March of 2010, when Epitaph Records fired up Refused’s old website pasted “Coming Soon” across the page. As speculation mounted, the truth came out from Punknews.org. It turns out that the reincarnation was not to be; the internet stunt being just a promotional tool to hype a reissue of the band’s final album “The Shape of Punk to Come”
The reunion did actually happen, however, and once again the culprit that spread the news was the internet. In 2012, when Coachella released it’s lineup posters online, Refused were included. On January 9nth, 2012, it was publicly announced on BBC Radio 1’s “Punk Show” that Refused were coming back from the dead to play Coachella, a consipiracy that was later put to rest in affirmation by Dennis Lyxzen on Facebook. They continued to play after that, and headlined the Groezrock festival in Belguim and played on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on July 18th, 2012. After Coachella, the band confirmed on Facebook that their reunon was only for the year of 2012, and not a new start to their career.
The fact that Jon Brannstrom was fired from the band and released an extensive letter about what had happened and how things turned out why they had implies that they are working on a new album, and that their death, subsequent and fleeting rebirth and dispersal will end up looking something like the life cycle of a phoenix. Are they going to become reborn, out of their own ashes?
A caption on an Instagram looks like they will be. It reads “”in austria tonight for the ahoi pop festival weekend along with st. vincent and this guy’s band invsn which he’s doing between finishing vocals for the new refused album that’s coming out next year.” This seems to be the only information available in regarding the new record release, and unfortunately, this Instagram has been taken down, and is no longer available to reference. Only time will tell. For more information, read this.
