Bryan Ferry’s looking inwards on his newest single, “Soldier of Fortune,” a fantastic new track from his upcoming album Avonmore.
Roxy Music’s most prolific songwriter is looking within himself to form the principal material for his newest album Avonmore. A new single from the upcoming record, “Soldier of Fortune” has recently seen the light of day, and it certainly feels like Ferry isn’t too pleased with some elements of his past. An oft-repeated line in the song has Ferry confessing, “I had the world on a string, and I threw it all away.” It seems that there are elements within Ferry’s life that haven’t gone as planned, and now he’s forced to look back and revisit the course that his life has taken. His previous record, The Jazz Age saw him re-recording a collection of some of his most well-known tunes and reinvigorating them with a new jazz feel to them. The record itself ultimately lead Ferry to contributing to the recent remake of The Great Gatsby. If the record sounds at all like “Soldier of Fortune,” this is certainly a bold new direction for the songwriter. “Soldier of Fortune” itself is a very even-keel, laid-back kind of song, and Ferry’s vocals, while barely decipherable, add a tinge of sorrow to the song.
Bryan Ferry’s Avonmore will be released on November 17th.
