I’ve just finished watching the video for “Arthur’s Song,” and I feel as though I’ve just had a flashback to the 90s. This flashback wasn’t triggered by the foxy brunette mowing what turns out to be a cemetery lawn, not because of the bus that appears at the end of the video, but because of the sly plug to Sony Walkman cassette players that are featured in the video. Seriously, there are Walkmans all over the place in Atmospheres new video. The lyrics in the song tell me to “Write your own way in the world,” and I have a feeling that the rampant presence of Sony Walkmans is meant to bolster that sound advice. After all, what’s the most effective way to “write your own way in the world” than to strap on an outdated form of music technology while engaging in postmortem landscape beautification? Rest assured, I’ve asked myself this question an estimated twenty seven thousand times over the last two and a half minutes, and I can’t come up with a better answer.

Regardless of the larger philosophical implications of the Walkmans presence in the video, Atmospheres new song is encouraging the listener to carve their own path in the world, in whichever direction they see fit. Because of this, I’m wondering if MC Sean Daley and producer Anthony Davis are Robert Frost fans, but that’s probably missing the point entirely.

Doug Farrell: Am I a hip old lady that can hip-hop, be-bop, dance 'til you drop, and yo-yo make a wicked hot cup of co-co? No, but I am a struggling twenty-eight year old writer who loves music and writing about music.
