This week, Metallica announced they’ll be doing a weeklong residency on CBS’s The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
Much like the Foo Fighters did on Letterman, Metallica will perform every night during the week of November 17th, 2014. The band will be playing Ferguson out in style, as their appearance is scheduled during his last season hosting The Late Late Show.
After a decade on air, the Scottish host announced his departure this past April, just a few short weeks after David Letterman of The Late Show announced that he would be departing his late night television spot, too. Ferguson’s final Late Late Show broadcast will take place in December; however, an official date for his departure has not been announced. Then, British actor and comedian James Corden will take over the show, according to Rolling Stone.
“What better way to celebrate Craig’s awesome tenure at CBS than to come and shake the rafters for a whole week,” Metallica’s Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone. “Nothing to sell, nothing to promote (except a reissue DVD)…purely hanging at Craig’s personal request. Bring it!”
With the DVD, a 10th anniversary reissue of the Some Kind of Monster documentary due out November 24th, Ulrich’s quote about “nothing to promote” isn’t entirely true; but, he is correct in that the band is not promoting any “new” material at this time, because they are in the process of writing a new album of original material.
In addition to the DVD, the band will be releasing a limited edition 180-gram vinyl pressing of their latest single, “Lords of Summer.” The new vinyl single will be available on November 28th, which is Record Store Day and Black Friday.
Lastly, in December, Metallica will be releasing a boxed set of all twenty-seven of the band’s live performances in 2014 – including their inaugural performance at Glastonbury, and an acoustic performance benefiting MusiCares that featured covers of Ozzy Osbourne’s “Diary of a Madman”, “When a Blind Man Cries” by Deep Purple, and The Beatles’ “In My Life”, according to Consequence of Sound. Metallica’s boxed set is out now on CD, and it is also available via digital download. And, a selection of shows chosen by fans from the box set, according to Rolling Stone, will be available on vinyl, beginning in early 2015.
