The New Basement Tapes have established their versatility and talent with a newly released song off of their upcoming album, Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes. Taylor Goldsmith acts as frontman for “Liberty Street.”
By now, you have probably heard of the rising group of talented musicians who call themselves The New Basement Tapes. With an abundance of Bob Dylan lyrics from 1967 in hand, members Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James and Marcus Mumford, are back with another track off of their forthcoming album, Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes.
The track, entitled “Liberty Street,” is more minimalist in comparison to their previously released songs such as “Nothing To It,” “Married To My Hack,” “When I Get My Hands On You,” and “Spanish Mary.” Taylor Goldsmith takes the reigns as lead, providing his melancholy voice over the soothing keystrokes of a piano.
Although “Liberty Street” exudes a feeling that is both gentle and calming, Goldsmith maintains a commanding confidence in his singing.
Goldsmith says in a press release, “Bob Dylan has a way of saying lines like ‘Six months in Kansas City down on Liberty Street’ and it having an immediate, yet sometimes ineffable, power. When I started putting these words to music, the structure of the words dictated the way the chords rolled out so it came together really fast. And the recording of it was our first take.”
