The pop masters’ latest track is a match made in bubblegum heaven. Here’s the video for “Never Been In Love.”
Poppy melodies and crazy Swedish nights, who could say no to that?
The latest from Cobra Starship and Icona Pop is exactly what you’d expect from two of the biggest names in experimental pop music today. “Never Been In Love” contains hook, after hook, after hook of melodies designed to get you moving. The final product sounds as though someone plugged in an algorithm for the most quintessential pop song of all time.
It’s all here: the bubbly, mildly auto-tuned vocals, the breakdown with a keyboard and hands clapping the beat, the harmonies and, most importantly, a partly wordless chorus anyone can remember.
The vocals switch between Icona Pop’s classic verses to Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta in the chorus. It sounds like there are more singers here than in The Polyphonic Spree.
This is not serious music, and the music video captures this spirit. Fashion photographer and music video director Ellen von Unwerth joined the mashed-up group on a prance through Sweden’s streets for the video concept.
Saporta flew to Sweden to join Icona Pop in the filming of the music video. They didn’t have an idea for a huge concept or a set of scenes. Instead, they goofed around all over Sweden. Von Unwerth captured scenes of the group at parties, running through the streets, hanging out at a carnival and even threw in a few scenes in a music studio. The video for “Never Been In Love” doesn’t follow a storyline of any kind, but encapsulates the candy-coated, easy-going feel of the song.
“Never Been In Love” debuted this summer, but this is the first official video that the groups have released for the song. The previous video was an effects-heavy lyric video.
Icona Pop just announced a huge Campus Consciousness tour this fall, so be sure to catch them on their final dates over the next few days.
The duo also released new song without Cobra Starship this summer called “Get Lost.” Keep an eye out for more new music from Icona Pop in the coming months.
