WATCH: Chvrches Release New Video For “Under The Tide”

Scottish electro-pop group Chvrches released a video for their song, “Under The Tide”, that is out of this world, literally.

Chvrches have been regarded as being a forward thinking and futuristic band; so, it’s no surprise the video for “Under The Tide” has taken them to new heights. It is also one of the few songs on Bones of What You Believe that features Martin Doherty taking over the lead vocal duties from Lauren Mayberry, the band’s usual front woman, according to Spin.

In “Under The Tide”, the band steps back to let an animated gravity-defying story about love and loss take center stage. The anime focuses in on an astronaut, who is separated from his love interest, because he is saving the world from peril.

The video intercuts between the unfolding drama in space, a magenta lit Doherty singing, and a visually flashy club inspired light show.

The song, itself, features a moderately paced up-tempo electronic dance beat, and Doherty singing a contemplative lyric about overcoming fear, holding on, and being there for another person. The track alternates between Doherty singing alone, a multi-layered chorus, and Doherty singing over the multi-tracked voices of his band mates.

And, all bad space related puns aside, in pairing a catchy song, anime, and creative lighting; Chvrches revitalized a conceptual theme that on the surface had risked becoming cliché as a result of several Hollywood films.

This video release follows on the heels of the group’s tour that included a performance at Austin City Limits, where they showcased a tentatively titled new song. Additionally, U.K. fans have something to look forward to later this month when BBC Radio Three broadcasts Drive, a rescored film featuring music by Chvrches.
