Close to Perfect
King Fantastic consists of rapper Killer Reese and DJ/producer Troublemaker. On their latest LP Great Man Theory, these two expand on the sound they’ve already made semi-famous. They describe their sound as “Westcoastsynthesizerbeachbumgangstermusic” and it’s the perfect summation of what they do. Killer Reese has a certain charisma on the mike that is rare these days, both funny without coming across as silly and real and without coming across as faking it, he has all the qualities it takes to be a good MC. On the other side Troublemaker creates some of the most unique beats heard on a hip hop track. Troublemaker incorporates indie rock-ish instrumentals morphed with more traditional hip hop elements making something that truly sounds unique.
Great Man Theory is packed full of 10 great songs. From the beginning with “Sands Through the Hourglass,” Troublemaker brings you in slowly with a soft ambient vibe before hitting you with a fuzzed out guitar playing bluesy riffs. The true apex of the song is at almost the 2 minute mark when Killer Reese finally opens his mouth. Reese’s verses just lay perfectly over the track. “Sexbot Sexpot,” is a great song about that crazy type of girl everyone has had at one point or another in their life. “Yup… Yup… Yup…,” barely breaking the minute and a half mark really shows what Reese is capable of on the mic.
King Fantastic have created an exceptionally well rounded album with Great Man Theory. Killer Reese and Troublemaker each shine in their own way and still manage to compliment each other perfectly. This is an LP that should be on many peoples’ top 5 albums of 2014 list because it’s hard to think of many other LPs dropped this year that are this close to a perfect album.
