A Better Way To Fall
Wonder Where We Land is like jumping out of a plane. You have an idea of where SBTRKT’s second full-length studio album might drop you but as you float through it the terrain becomes more uncertain. None of the potential drop zones are frightening or harmful, but vastly different. You could end up on a soulful piano melody, a speedy dance tune or even on a strange disorienting interlude. SBTRKT has given us the opportunity to jump into something fantastic.
Wonder Where We Land is the musical manifestation of SBTRKT’s pursuit of anonymity. He is not as secretive as say Banksy, but the UK producer has made it clear that he wants the music to come first. He wants to release the best noise that he can into the world for people to enjoy or to not. Wonder Where We Land is just that. The songs on the album cover so many different genres, with so many different featured artists that to the unknowing ear it would be extremely difficult to determine who was behind all of this sensational madness. SBTRKT brings along Sampha, A$AP Ferg, Ezra Koenig, Raury and many others.
“Voices In My Head (feat. A$AP Ferg),” is particularly interesting. SBTRKT chose to have this song be the last sounds from Wonder Where We Land. It starts and ends with trippy wandering piano and drum breaks in which Ferg muses over about the things drugs can do to you. “Voices” and Wonder Where We Land finish with the piano aimlessly tinkling off to wherever.< SBTRKT is a music lover and Wonder Where We Land is for music lovers. The kind of people who start sweating when someone asks them what kind of music they listen to. Saying, “Everything,” never seems to suffice. Just tell them you’ve been spinning SBTRKT’s new album, either they’ll understand, or they won’t.
