No Album Has Gone Platinum In 2014

With the end of 2014 looming, no album has gone platinum in any genre for the first time ever.

For the first time ever, no album has crossed the platinum threshold this year. Some atribute this occurance to piracy, but the industry’s slow changing technologies and old habits, may also share the blame.

The only album that has sold more than a million copies has been the Frozen soundtrack with 3.2 million copies sold. Beyonce’s self titled, surprise album and Lorde’s Pure Heroine have sold more than 700,000 copies and are the best selling albums this year, however, all of these three albums were released in 2014, as reported on CraveOnline.

Last year about five artists crossed the platinum line but this year, no one is close to reaching this achievement, not even those currently topping the charts. Only about five artists have crossed the gold status mark, selling more than 500,000 copies.

This shift in music consumption leaves to wonder what changes need to be done in the industry and whether streaming sources are helping artists or not. With the numbers not racking up the way they are supposed to and only two months left for an artist to go platinum, watching the charts during the last stretch of 2014 will make or break thoughts on the industry.
