Damien Rice has a new video out for the song “I Don’t Want To Change You,” off his soon-to-be-released album.
Damien Rice has had a very successful year. All his US shows are sold out. His new album My Favorite Faded Fantasy comes out next month, on the 10th, and it’s his first new material in eight years. The preview of the album reached #3 globally on “Spotify’s Top 10 Most Viral Tracks.”
Now, he’s just released the video for his song, “I Don’t Want to Change You,” which is the lead single off the upcoming album. According to the press release, Icelandic filmmakers Arni & Kinski directed the video, which was shot in Iceland (which is also where most of My Favorite Faded Fantasy was recorded). The song debuted on BBC Radio 1 and NPR’s “All Songs Considered.”
The video begins with Rice on a dock that stretches out onto a beautiful lake that looks like deep blue glass. “Wherever you go/ Well, I can always follow,” he begins in his familiar mellow vocals. It’s an emotional song in a slow way that makes you shiver up till the very end, when Rice goes off the dock and slides underneath the still blue waters. The repetitions of “I don’t want to change you/ I don’t want to change you / I don’t want to change your mind” are powerful – really, all the lyrics in this song are – and moving. This video makes you feel things.
