Organizers of Record Store Day will release limited edition vinyl at participating indie stores this year on Black Friday, which falls on November 28th, and will feature releases from artist like Outkast, Jenny Lewis, and The Flaming Lips.
For the organizers of Record Store Day, Black Friday isn’t all about stocking up on consumer items at the lowest prices of the season, but creating “pieces of art in the form of limited special editions,” according to the Record Store Day website.
According to Pitchfork, Black Friday falls on November 28th this year, and with limited edition releases coming from artists like Jenny Lewis, Mastadon, Conor Oberst, The Flaming Lips, Outkast, and Wu Tang Clan, you don’t want to miss out.
Jenny Lewis will release 7” “Pax-Am Sessions” which includes alternate versions of songs “Just One of the Guys” and “You Can’t Outrun ‘Em,” originally released on her third studio album The Voyager. Recorded at Ryan Adam’s studio Pax-Am, the songs deal with Lewis’ recent heartbreak and are influenced by Adam’s alt-country sound.
Heavy metal band Mastodon is releasing a 12″ picture disc of song “The Motherload,” off their latest album Once More Round the Sun, which also features an instrumental version of “Halloween.” Mastodon is currently on tour in promotion of their recent album and is scheduled to hit major US cities from mid-October to mid-November before heading overseas.
Conor Oberst, who released his sixth studio album in May, will release a 7” single of previously unheard songs “Standing On the Outside Looking In” and “Sugar Street,” which were recorded during the Upside Down Mountain sessions. Oberst told Pitchfork that his new recordings offer a “return” to his earlier songwriting style.
The Flaming Lips will release a transparent red vinyl version of their previously released Christmas album Atlas Eets Christmas. Originally released as a CD and under the pseudonym Imagene Peise, the limited edition red vinyl makes a superb Christmas gift for any die hard Flaming Lips-fans.
Also releasing a record in keeping with the holiday spirit, Outkast will release a translucent green 10” inch single for “Player’s Ball,” off their debut album 1994’s Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. The single also features a rare extended version of the song. The rap duo reunited on stage for the first time in ten years at last April’s Coachella, and have continued their reunion with performances at festivals such as Sasquatch!, Governor’s Ball, Bestival, and upcoming Treasure Island.
Wu Tang Clan will release a picture disc single for “C.R.E.A.M.” off their 1993 studio album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The single will be backed by song “The Mystery Of Chessboxin,” also off their debut album. Consequence of Sound reported an official release date of the rap group’s long-awaited new album A Better Tomorrow for December 2nd, 2014.
Unlike Record Store Day in April, independent record stores carry the Black Friday event releases as long as they want to, as the goal is to remind “music fans of the gift of music at the kick off of the holiday season.
You can go on the Record Store Day website to find a complete list of participating stores, and an official list of all releases will come out next week.
