You read that right. If this Kickstarter campaign raises enough funds, we’ll have a remix of Run the Jewels’ RTJ2 album made entirely from cat sounds.
It sounds like a news story straight out of The Onion, but it’s very, very real. Run the Jewels is about to make one of the first official cat noise remixes in recent history. Well, any history actually. For some reason this genre doesn’t seem that popular.
At the time this story was published, the Kickstarter campaign had raised about half of its $45,100 goal, with about 19 days left to go. We are 19 days closer to proving once and for all that cats rule the internet.
This whole catastrophe (come on, that was punny) started when Run the Jewels members El-P and Killer Mike decided to remix their RTJ2 record. The result will be a new version of the album made entirely from the noises of our feline friends that we’ve come to know and love (or if it’s 3 a.m., hate).
The remix, called Meow the Jewels, has a few more names on board should backers throw in enough donations. Zola Jesus, Just Blaze and Skywlkr have all pledged to produce tracks. As if that weren’t good enough, El-P says he will donate all of the money he earns to a charity for the families of Eric Garner and Mike Brown. The rest of the proceeds will go to making the record.
If you’ve always secretly wanted an album of cat sounds, you might get a few perks for donating. The Kickstarter has an eight-tier system for special prizes based on pledge amounts.
Pledge $10 and get a digital copy of the album, plus a special tweet thanking you for your donation. Pledge $100 and get all of that, plus a shirt, book of matches, a poster, a bag of catnip (really, you actually get this), stickers and a special prize. If you pledge the highest amount at $5,000, you’ll get a special edition vinyl of the album (autographed by Run the Jewels and a cat), as well as your cat featured on the album. If you love your cat Mr. Mittons McWhiskers, but wish he were more famous, now’s your chance.
Just Blaze will add something even more special if the Kickstarter goes through:
If meow the jewels gets released I’ll also release a kit of all the drums I used from 2001-2005. Donate fools.

Zola Jesus, on being part of the production:
Everyone donate to the @MeowTheJewels kickstarter. If funded I’ll produce a track. Meow. https://t.co/sxUFAgvZr7 — Zola Jesus (@ZOLAJESUS) October 7, 2014
Meanwhile, El-P wants to know what more he has to do to get you to crack a smile:
ok thats me, @JustBlaze, @xskywlkr ,@ZOLAJESUS remixng #RTJ2 using nothing but cat sounds for music, for charity. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?
