Rufus Wainwright is an American-Canadian singer-songwriter and composer. He has recorded a total of seven albums, and numerous tracks on compilations and film soundtracks. Wainwright has also written a classical opera and set Shakespeare sonnets to music for a theater piece by Robert Wilson.
Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. Rufus has received Juno Awards for Best Alternative Album in 1999 and 2002 for his albums Rufus Wainwright and Poses. He was nominated for Songwriter of the Year in 2008 for his album Release the Stars. The legendary musician Elton John has referred to Wainwright as “the greatest songwriter on the planet.” Wainwright has also been praised by the New York Times for his “genuine originality.”
Wainwrights most recent album is titled, Out of the Game, and was released through Decca and Polydor Records. Wainwright claimed that Out of the Game contained the “poppiest” most “danceable” music in his album history, and was influenced by the birth of his daughter and the death of his mother. In 2014, Universal Records released Vibrate: The Best of Rufus Wainwright, a new collection that featured 18 songs defining one of music’s most innovative talents.
