Buck 65 – NEVERLOVE

Heartache, Despair and Regret

“You better be careful/Love will fuck you up,” Buck 65 confesses on his latest release NEVERLOVE. Written during and after his divorce, this is a break-up album through and through. Verses expressing heartache, despair and regret collide with some remarkable beats to create an LP that will make anyone who has ever gone through similar circumstances automatically be teleported back to that moment in time.

“Gates of Hell,” opens up this freshly cut wound and Buck let’s his heart bleed on the table here.  The raw emotional screams on the chorus is one of the most purest sounds ever recorded. “Je Taime Mon Amour “ and “That’s The Way Love Dies” adds a bit of pop flare to lighten the mix of some of the more darker songs.  That is one of the nice things about this album, once the mood gets a tad to dreary Buck throws out a bit of light.  “Super Pretty Naughty,” is like a rainbow in a tsunami. Imagine a Black Eyed Peas song with even more random lyrics but in a good way.

When one listens to a break up album, though, it’s the sad songs that are always the strongest. “Baby Blanket”, with it’s spares instrumentals, shows Buck sitting in an empty house him and his former wife talked about bearing a child in. “Solitary, single. /Phantom limbs that tingle,” Buck speaks on “Heart of Stone,” with Jessica Lee were he contemplates on his failed relationship and how it came to be.

Every track on this album could have it’s own paragraph pointing out why it deserves a listen. Each song is that good.  NEVERLOVE is more than just a breakup album, its a great album. Heartbreak is hell and in the wake of it all some people are able to create glorious things.
