A mere ten days after releasing their new studio album In A Dream, The Juan MacLean have let slip a new video for the single “A Simple Design.”
It’s always exciting when a group or solo artists begins to churn out a motherload of quality material, and The Juan MacLean’s certainly no exception to that rule. Shortly after releasing In A Dream, MacLean joined forces with Sharon Van Etten, remixing the latter’s “Our Love” to electronic excellence. Just over a week later, we now have access to the music video for “A Simple Design,” which features both MacLean and vocalist Nancy Whang surrounded by paints and various transparent barriers.
The video features several shots of MacLean mixing various paints together and using a brush to paint across the screen. The paint in this case is both literal (the paint can literally be seen at various points during the video), and symbolic as well. While MacLean’s love of mixing electronic music stems from the early days following the breakup of his band Six Finger Satellite, the music itself may have painted MacLean into a corner, an idea that presents itself during the video when MacLean begins to slowly paint green paint across the screen. Later on in the video, the paint is appearing to wash away from the screen, giving off the idea that perhaps MacLean sees the new record as a way of breaking from the traditions that his stage moniker may carry with it.
Whether I’m reaching way beyond what MacLean was intending, or whether I’ve hit the nail right on the head, the fact remains that the video fits the song. It’s a simple design that conveys some of the inner meanings within the lyrics themselves, and it’s a perfect presentation for an amazing single off of an amazing record.
