TOKiMONSTA aka Jennifer Lee is an LA-born and raised producer and DJ who learned classical piano at an early age (she took over a decade’s worth of classes), and who uses her compositional abilities to produce beats. Her name stagename TOKiMONSTA is derived from ‘Toki’, Korean for rabbit, and hip-hop term ‘monsta’. She was discovered by Steven Ellison of Flying Lotus during her college years at a monthly open mic night that showcased her skills in hip-hop beat battles. Their friendship blossomed, and her debut album Midnight Menu was released in 2010 via his label Brainfeeder; the following year she released her EP Creature Dreams on the same label.
TOKiMONSTA has collaborated with Daedelus, Kool Keith, Justin Timberlake, and MNDR, and released her second album Half Shadows via Ultra Records last year. She has toured extensively, and has played major festivals Coachella, SXSW, Sonar Barcelona, and Electric Zoo.
Looks can be deceiving- TOKiMONSTA’s sound is similar to Teebs and Nosaj Thing, but has a mind of its own. Listen carefully, and you can decipher fragments of her influences, including DJ Krush, Dilla, DJ Shadow, and DJ Scruff.
