U2 Releases New Album Songs of Innocence For Free Download

At Apple’s announcement of their new gadgets today in Cupertino, California, U2 showed up to announce that their latest record is available for free on iTunes.

The band appeared at the end of the event and debuted a new track for the live audience, then announcing the new album, Songs of Innocence. The album is available exclusively on iTunes today through October. It is available to all of Apple’s 500 million customers free of charge during that time.

According to an interview with Bono, the album is heavily influenced by music that U2 loves from the 1970s, like David Bowie and Joy Division. The lead track of the album is titled “The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)” and the song “This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now” is a tribute to The Clash. On a different note, Swedish songstress Lykke Li appears on closing track “The Troubles.”

The physical release for the record will be October 13. A deluxe edition includes acoustic session of songs from the album and four additional tracks, while a double white-vinyl LP will also be available for purchase.
