Nick Cave began his musical career in The Birthday Party band. The group, which was formed in 1973, included Mick Harvey (guitar), Phill Calvert (drums), John Cochivera (guitar), Brett Purcell (bass), and Chris Coyne (saxophone). Tracy Pew replaced Purcell on bass. In 1977 the band changes its name to The Boys Next Door. Rowland S. Howard joined the band in 1978. The band broke up in 1984.
That year Neck Cave formed Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds along with Mick Harvey and Blixa Bargeld (guitar). Barry Adamson and Jim G. Thirlwell were also part of inital line up as was Hugo Race.
