Seattle’s Minus the Bear was founded in 2001. Jake Snider (vocals, guitar), Dave Knudson (guitar), Cory Murchy (bass), Alex Rose (synths, vocals) and Erin Tate (drums) make up the indie rock act. Matt Bayles (keyboard) was also a member of the band until 2006 when he was replaced by Rose. Together Minus the Bear wrote five full-length albums and four EPs.
Their debut EP This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic was released in 2001 on Suicide Squeeze Records. Their first full-length Highly Refined Pirates came out in 2002 on the same label. Bands Like It When You Yell “Yar!” at Them, a promotion EP, was also released the same year. It was followed by the They Make Beer Commercials Like This EP in 2004 and the full-length Menos el Oso in 2005. Polyvinyl Record Co released their split Minus The Bear/City On Film 7″ Split in 2005 as well. A record of remixes of Menos el Oso titled Interpretaciones del Oso was released in 2007. The band’s third full-length Planet of Ice also came out in 2007 and their next EP Acoustics came out in 2008. The following year they released Into the Mirror, another EP.
The band moved to Dangerbird Records in 2010. That year Omni was released off of Dangerbird and the following year their Hold Me Down EP was released. 2012 saw the release of their EPs Your Private Sky/South Side Life and Steel And Blood/Surf-N-Turf as well as their full-length Infinity Overheard. In 2012 the band also moved to the record label Big Scary Monsters. Since the band has released two EPs, Acoustics II in 2013 and Lost Loves in 2014.
