WATCH: GWAR-B-Q Viking Funeral For Oderus Urungus

After the death of GWAR frontman Dave Brockie in March of this year, fans honored his memory by sending off Brockie’s Oderus Urungus in true viking fashion.

As GWAR.net describes it, “any self-respecting GWAR-B-Q is about two things-MEAT and MUSIC.” But this year, the GWAR-B-Q had another purpose: the final send off (and second funeral) for Dave Brockie.

Fans gathered at the annual GWAR-B-Q this year with heavy hearts. After the death of Dave Brockie due to an accidental drug overdose, the founder of GWAR was given a traditional viking send-off. His famous Oderus Urungus costume, placed in a boat laden with flowers and offerings, was set aflame by an impressive flaming arrow shot across the lake.

Lamb of God singer and close friend of Brockie, Randy Blythe, said, “watching my friend Dave’s costume go up in flames in front of a thousand fans was so much more intense for me than the private memorial.” You can watch the video below, where amidst cheers, clapping, and distant music, Dave Brockie’s fans get to say their goodbyes.

In Blythe’s words, “Fly free, Oderus—you are missed.”
