Jam packed with friends, past collaborators, featured artists and producers, Mark Lanegan’s new album, Phantom Radio is set to be released on October 14.
According to a Vagrant press release, Lanegan has enlisted Alain Johannes to produce the album while co-writing some of the songs. After teaming up with British guitarist Duke Garwood on the 2013 album Black Pudding, they decided to do it again for the creation of “I Am The Wolf.” Shelley Brien, Lanegan’s girlfriend for the past ten years, lends him her vocals for “Floor Of The Ocean”, while Dutch violinist Sietse Van Gorkom, co-wrote the trip-hop-inspired “The Killing Season.
When asked about the song “Floor Of The Ocean”, Lanegan said,
It’s rare for me to be moved by my own, but that song has a sadness that actually affected me when I heard it back. I’m very fond of it.”
Lanegan’s process for this album, which happens to be very similar to his 2012 Blues Funeral, was to record every song he wrote. First he would write a song, bring it to Alain Johannes, who would then arrange the recordings at his studio on West Hollywood, then once the song was recorded, Lanegan would take a few days off and write another one.
In July Lanegan released a video for “Sad Lover”, a track off his vinyl-only, five song EP, No Bells On Sunday, which he only pressed up 1500 copies of.
