Kristine Flaherty, better known by her stage name K.Flay, is a rapper, producer and alumna of Stanford University in California. While at college she met and befriended many people who would later become the backbone of her musical life. For a time, she was a self-described tomboy, wearing “ridiculously baggy attire” and “avoiding all things girly.”

K.Flay believes that most hop-hop hits on the radio were simplistic, misogynistic, and formulaic. She proclaimed that even she could do a song like that, so she did. To demonstrate, she wrote her song “Blingity Blang Blang,” which she described as a “low budget rap parody that contained far too many obscenities.” Discovering her passion for writing and signing music, she produced two more songs before the end of the year.

During her sophomore year at Stanford, she began performing for live audiences, and by her junior year she released her debut album, Suburban Rap Queen, which earned a local buzz and a solid group of fans. K.Flay’s most recent album, Life As A Dog, was announced in April, and was funded by fans through PledgeMusic. The San Francisco Chronicle commented on the new album and said “The new songs are colored with do-or-die inspiration, mixing her rapid-fire verses with sleek melodies and intricate electronic arrangements.” Entertainment Weekly stated that the album “pairs spaced-out rap beats and chiming indie rock that K.Flay tops with her frequently tricky flows, making a chocolate-in-my-peanut-butter situation that should please rap-loving indie rockers, or the other way around.”
