Black Lips formed in 1999 in Dunwoody, Georgia. The band currently consist of Cole Alexander (vocals/guitar), Jared Swilley (vocals/bass), Joe Bradley (vocals/drums), Ian Saint PeBrown (guitar), and Jack Hines (vocals/guitar). Alexander and Swilley were known for their crude antics during shows. They were both kicked out of high school during their senior year after the Columbine Massacre because they were regarded as a “subculture danger.”
Black Lips released their first 7-inch in 2002 which featured “Juvenile” and “Ain’t Coming Back.” Their debut full length album, Black Lips!, was released on Bomp! Records in 2003. Their follow up was, We Did Not Know The Forest Spirit Made the Flowers Grow, which was released a year later. Once they embarked on tour, they built a fanbase that appreciated their unique sound, which incorporates blues, rock, country, and punk. They gained national attention in 2006 with features in Spin, and Rolling Stone magazines. They received exposure in the New York Times in 2007 during Austin’s own, South by Southwest. The Black Lips played over a dozen shows within a three day period.
The Black Lips latest album is, Underneath the Rainbow, which was released March 17 of this year. Some of their most well-known singles throughout their music career are “Boys in the Wood,” “Family Tree,” “Justice After All,” and “Funny.”
