Fucked Up released Glass Boys in June, but now we’ve got the chance to listen to two tracks that were also written at the same time- and maybe should have made it onto the album.
The band said on their Facebook page that both “Blink” and “The Way We Did” were recorded during Glass Boys sessions, and “are really good. The songs are about subcultures and growing up around the punk scenes we did in Toronto. On the cover of the record is a picture of Will Munro, who left us way too soon.” There are 500 copies of this new release, but this record may not be the last- the band’s Facebook also says “We’re gonna have a few Glass Boys sessions 7″s coming out this summer.”
“Blink” starts off slow but soon changes into a fast-paced, powerful song with harsh vocals that hit you from start to finish. It’s sharp, it’s intense. “Stare and you’ll miss me, blink and you’ll see-” in a way, the entire song feels like a spasm of blinking, light and dark, slow and fast that alternate in an almost ridiculous pace.
In a pretty different vein, “The Way We Did” is a lively, rugged anthem- it’s raw, pumped with feeling. The lyrics are what you’d expect from a catchy punk song: “He didn’t think that we’d do it. She didn’t think that we’d make it. Now that we’ve been through it, let’s throw it in their faces.” This song isn’t happy, but it’s not the same sort of pain that comes through in “Blink.” It’s weirdly upbeat in it’s own way, and if you’re looking for a new punk jam to blast out this summer, give this one a go.
