Columbia, Maryland’s leg of the Mad Decent Block Party touring festival has now left two deaths in its wake, a 20-year-old man from Raleigh, North Carolina, and a 17-year old high school student from Virginia.
Mad Decent Block Party has a different lineup in each city, with the 2014 festival featuring stops in 21 cities throughout North America. The first death to be reported over the weekend of August 1 was of 20-year-old Tyler Fox Viscardi, who died of drug-related causes. The Virginia teen who also died after attending the festival is believed to have died of drug-related causes as well, though it appears that those two festival-goers had never met.
The Saturday stop resulted in 20 hospitalizations overall, most of them related in some way to drug issues. Three people were also arrested at the festival: one for assaulting a police officer, one for domestic assault, and one for marijuana possession. The organizers at Mad Decent and Diplo, a headliner at this weekend’s festivities, both offered condolences via Twitter, as seen below.
Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by yesterday’s event. We are saddened by the news.
