American soul and R&B singer Janelle Monáe released a new video this week for her song, “Electric Lady” from her album, The Electric Lady. Monáe has a little help from her friends and ‘sorority sisters’ in the new video.
The video features T-Boz, Estelle, Esperanza Spalding, Monica and Kimbra as honorable alumnae of the fictional sorority Electro Phi Beta. Additionally, there are notable cameo appearances from T.I., Joi, and choreographer Fatima Robinson, along with Monáe’s mother.
Aesthetically, the video combines influences of the 1970s, such as eight track tapes, with modern mobile devices. Monáe is dressed in a letter jacket and a pink-and-black crop top. And, in the video, she is helping the sorority host an elaborate party that includes cupcakes, dancing fraternity brothers, a marching band, and so much more.
