Cats aren’t what you’d call great dieters. They refuse to do it unprompted, no matter how logically you explain that it would be a healthy decision. So any diets are generally enforced by cat owners, a group of people with already vaguely hostile pets. Scratches, scars, and now songs are the result.
Voignamir. No, it’s not a new metal band, it’s what Grimes named her cat. We’re not entirely sure what this says about the cat or the cat’s owner, but Grimes always does things the interesting way. The Canadian artist is a master of the outside path, attending college for Russian lit and Neuroscience before taking off, building a houseboat, and sailing said houseboat partway down the Mississippi River. But surprising lives produce surprising work, and Grimes is no exception. Her third studio album, Visions, reportedly written during a 9-day sleepless stint, is lighting up critical radars all across North America.
So she can name her cat whatever she likes. She also may have fed him a little liberally, hence the diet we mentioned earlier. Voignamir’s reaction wasn’t positive, to quote Grimes:
ooooh my gosh
found this song on my computer that me and dev of majical cloudz made in like 2009 about our cat voignamir who at the time was on very bad terms with us because we were forcing him to diet and so he was like, very violent but literally like 20 or 30 pounds.
i dont know why it sounds like indie rock haha, neither of us really make music like this
The co-owner she’s mentioning there is Devon Walsh of Majical Cloudz, a Canadian electronic duo. Give the song a listen, it’s definitely not normal fare for Grimes or Walsh, but it’s a pretty piece of indie rock with a funny story. Never a bad thing.
