Cheap Trick formed in 1973. Before that lead guitarist Rick Nielsen and drummer Brad Carlson (aka Bun E. Carlos) played in rivals bands in Rockford, Illinois. Nielsen started a band with bassist Tom Petersson and toured, eventually adding Carlos to the mix. Randy “Xeno” Hogan was added as a vocalist. Robin Zander replaced Hogan shortly thereafter and the group released a demo in 1975.
They were signed by Epic Records the following year. In 1977 Cheap Trick released Cheap Trick, their first album. This was followed by In Color later that same year. Heaven Tonight came out the year after than and included the track “Surrender.” The band released Cheap Trick at Budokan after touring Japan due to overwhelming popularity there. In 1979 they released Dream Police and Found All The Parts in 1980. All Shook Up also came out that year.
That summer Petersson left the band and was replaced by Pete Comita on tour. Jon Brant eventually began his regular replacement. Over the course of the next decade Cheap Trick released One on One (1982), Next Position Please (1983), Standing on the Edge (1985), The Doctor (1986) and Lap of Luxury (1988). The band continued to tour and release records.
In 1990 Busted was released and was followed by Greatest Hits in 1991. The next year Budokan II, which contained material from the band’s 1979 tour, came out. Around this time Cheap Trick left Epic for Warner Brothers Records. Woke Up With A Monster was released in 1994. Shortly thereafter in 1995, the left Warner Brothers and self-released Gift. After signing with Red Ant Records they released Cheap Trick in 1997. The band started its own record company Cheap Trick Unlimited. They released At Budokan: The Complete Concert.
Since the band has released Special One (2003), Rockford (2006), and The Latest (2009). In 2010 Carlos was replaced by Nielsen’s son Daxx. The current line-up is Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar), Tom Petersson (bass guitar) and Daxx Nielsen (drums).
