The Old 97’s are an alternative country band from Dallas, Texas that formed in 1993. They have released ten studio albums, two EPs, and one live album. Their most recent release is, Most Messed Up. Old 97’s are recognized as pioneers of the alternative country genres along with bands including Uncle Tupelo, Drive-By Truckers, Whiskeytown, The Jayhawks, and The Bottle Rockets.
The Old 97’s started playing in local bands in the Dallas area, and eventually toured the country after releasing their first album, Hitchhike to Rhome (1994). While in Chicago, the band caught the attention of Bloodshot Records. Their album, Wreck Your Life (1995), caught the attention of Elektra Records, who hoped their unique mix of genres would lead to new fad. Their latest album, Most Messed Up, was released this year on ATO Records, and hit spot number 30 on the Billboard 200.
Most Messed Up, has been explained as “a rock opera, a way-off Broadway musical about a musician’s life, loves and lubrication,” by music critic Bill Flanagan. The album was recorded in Austin, Texas, and features appearances by Tommy Stinson (The Replacements, Guns N’ Roses) and Jon Rauhouse (Neko Case) on lap-steel.
