Alt-J is an indie experimental band from Leeds, England. The band was named after the delta symbol, ∆, which is made my typing the “alt” key simultaneously with the “j” key. The symbol is used to denote change or difference in scientific study. Before settling on the name, the quartet also went by Daljit Dhaliwal and Films.
The band formed in 2007 when Gwil Sainsbury (guitar/bass), Thom Green (drums), Joe Newman (guitar/lead vocals) and Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards/vocals) met at Leeds University. After university, the band moved to Cambridge and recorded their debut album An Awesome Wave. In 2001 they were signed to Infectious Records.
The band played numerous festivals, including Lowlands and Reading and Leeds in 2012 as well as Lollapalooza, Glastonbury and Coachella in 2013. They also performed as part of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series in late 2012. In early 2014 Sainsbury left the band. The band continued touring and in June of that year they announced their second record This Is All Yours due out September 2014. Apart from their studio albums, the band also released ∆, a Demo EP in 2011 and an iTunes Session in 2013.
