Mark Foster (vocals, keyboards, piano, synthesizers, guitar, programming, percussion), Jacob “Cubbie” Fink (bass, vocals), and Mark Pontius (drums, percussion) make up the indie pop group Foster the People. Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the band first achieved commercial success with their song “Pump Up Kicks.” The track was the lead single off of their debut album Torches which was released in 2011. The band had formed in 2009 and wrote “Pumped Up Kicks” shortly their after. Their resulting popularity due to the song’s success landed the band a record deal with Startime International.
The band, originally called “Foster & the People”, began as Foster and Pontius. The two added Fink to the mix and not long after “Pumped Up Kicks” was written. After signing with Startime, the band wrote an album around “Pumped Up Kicks” and the song was formally released, having been released previously for free via Foster’s website. The resulting album, Torches, was preceded by an EP, Foster the People, which included “Pumped Up Kicks” along with “Houdini” and “Helena Beat”. Torches was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the Grammy Awards and Foster the People was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Pumped Up Kicks”.
Their second album, Supermodel, was released in March of 2014. Foster called the record “more organic and more human” than Torches. It’s lead single “Coming of Age” was released in January along with a video containing the album’s cover art. The artwork, a 148 ft X 126 ft mural in Downtown Los Angeles, was done by Young and Sick.
