When Chris DeVille of Stereogum spoke to Charli in 2013 about her plans for a new album, she was envisioning something with a harder edge influenced by punk-rock.

She told DeVille that her sound for the project was,

“inspired by French yé-yé pop and by ’80s New Wave bands like the Waitresses and Bow Wow Wow. And then also other fun things like bands like the Flying Lizards. And yeah it’s quite raw. It’s very feminine, but it’s also really aggressive and angry. And it’s a lot more live than anything I’ve ever done before. And it sounds fucking cool, actually.”

According to a recent interview with Pop Justice, Charli stated that her reasoning for making the punk album was due to a dislike of the music industry. Or, in her words, “I was over the music industry, I was over all of it.” So, in true punk fashion, she rebelled, traveling to Sweden, where she crafted a punk record.

But, an interview with Complex revealed that Charli’s also been working with Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo and Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend on a pop album.

She projected to Pop Justice that the new {pop} album will be complete in July, and said that the album features a number of collaborations, including: Weezer, Rostam from Vampire Weekend, Stargate, and John Hill.

So, will Charli fans be treated to two records this year? Only time will tell.
