James Mercer and Brian Burton formed the indie rock duo Broken Bells. The group began when Burton and Mercer met at the 2004 Roskilde Festival. In 2008 the two began working together, but didn’t formally announced the project until the following year. They released their debut Broken Bells in 2010. The next year the band released Meyrin Fields, an EP. Their second full-length After the Disco was released in 2014. The album included the song “Holding on for Life”, which the band also performed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Mercer is also known for his role as the lead singer of the indie band The Shins and Burton also performs under the stage name Danger Mouse. They worked together on the track “Insane Lullaby” off of Dark Night of the Soul by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse.
