Palms, the Los Angeles-based band, will return to the road this fall for a tour of the southwestern U.S. Palms features three former members of the post-metal band Isis, and Deftones frontman Chino Moreno.
The band released their self titled debut album in 2013, which Spin described as “the slow-orbiting-rocket float of Oceanic-era ISIS painted in soft colors, now with the gushing, soaring melodies that would work on an older sibling’s mixtape next to Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, US, or Depeche Mode.”
The foursome started playing together following the demise of Isis, when the three former Isis members – bassist Jeff Caxide, drummer Aaron Harris, and keyboardist & guitarist Clifford Meyer – wanted to continue playing music together after a period of time apart, despite all living in Los Angeles.
“It just sort of happened naturally, probably because we have been playing together for so long, and things started to come together,” Harris said in a press release.
But, instead of just being a three-part instrumental act, Harris, Caxide, and Meyer decided that they wanted to introduce vocals into their budding band. A decision on whom their singer would be took some time. Eventually, Deftones’ Moreno was chosen, because he was a fan of Isis, and seemed to complete the puzzle that became Palms.
“I’ve always been into the atmospheric sounds they had created with that project and felt my sense of melody would meld well with theirs,” Moreno said in a press release.
Palms premiered their live set with four headlining West Coast dates, and were System of a Down’s handpicked opening act at their Hollywood Bowl concert.
