Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Afropunk Festival returns to Commodore Barry Park on August 24 & 24, 2014. It’s the festival’s 10th year. In honor of that anniversary, Afropunk has a lot in store for attendees – from performances by D’Angelo and Body Count to a politically minded speaking area and food trucks serving up a variety of cuisine.
This year, Afropunk has planned to have four stages of music happening over the two days, including the more traditionally minded Black Stage, for heavy metal and punk music lovers. There will also be the Speakers corner, for those who want a chance to express political opinions. And while there is freedom of expression, “sexism, racism, abelism, homophobia, fatphobia, transphobia or general hatefulness” are not allowed, and anyone that is generally spewing hate will be asked to leave, according to a press release.
In the minds of organizers and attendees Afropunk is an idea, not a genre, and the festival is a celebration of all things and communities of the modern Do-It-Yourself (DIY) landscape. The New York Times described Afropunk as “the most multicultural festival in the US,” according to a press release.
The music at Afropunk is going to be a little bit of everything with performances by: Neo-soul multi-instrumentalist & producer D’Angelo, metal band Body Count, English folk & soul singer Lianne La Havas, California-based hardcore punk band Trash Talk, singer-songwriter & rapper Meshell Ndegeocello, metalcore band Straight Line Stich, doom soul singer Cold Specks, singer-songwriter SZA, alternative rock band Fishbone, experimental Seattle-based hip-hop collective Shabazz Palaces, and many more.
The festival will also feature various DJ sets by DJ Uniique from N.J., ballroom & vogue house DJ MikeQ, Brooklyn’s own Oscan Nñ, and more.
Additionally, the Spin Thrift Market where 100 vendors sell various goods and crafts, and the Art Wall where selected visual artists produce original works within the park grounds, will be present again this year.
