Portugal. The Man isn’t a man, but in fact four men from Wasilla, Alaska. John Baldwin Gourley (vocals, guitar, organ, drum machines), Zachary Carothers (bass guitar, backing vocals), Kyle O’Quin (keyboards, synthesizers, guitar, backing vocals) and Jason Sechrist (drums) formed the group in 2005 when attending high school together. Since forming, the band has jumped between Fearless Records, Equal Vision Records and Atlantic Records to record seven studio albums and several EPs. Their most recent effort 2013’s Evil Friends is the band’s most successful, peaking at the twenty-eighth spot on the Billboard 200. The album also featured singles “Evil Friends” and “Purple, Yellow, Red and Blue.”
In April of this year, Portugal. The Man partnered with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute to raise awareness about Sumatran tigers, which are critically endangered. The band released a limited-edition vinyl record, producing only 400. It featured their new track “Sumatran Tiger” and was sent to “400 carefully chosen influencers, among them actors, activists, musicians, conservationists, bloggers and journalists.” The idea behind the release being that without someone reproducing the song, since vinyl degrades and it does not exist digitally, it will disappear as the tigers will.
