In 2000, two indie pop rock artists from Montreal, Canada Nicholas Thorburn and Alden Penner formed the band known as the Unicorns, but after a tumultuous touring schedule, the band quickly split up in 2004. In February mxdwn reported that the Unicorns were planning a reunion including shows, recording and releases, and today they have confirmed this by announcing the first of these shows.
Starting August 1st, the Unicorns will open 5 shows for Arcade Fire with Dan Deacon, two at The Forum in Inglewood, CA and three in Brooklyn, NY at the Barclays Center.
In 2003, the band released it’s second album, Who Will Cut Your Hair When We’re Gone to rave reviews by The Village Voice, NME, Pitchfork, and many other publications, earning the band a large following. Although mxdwn did not totally agree, we did state that, “This band seems to be skulking around the edge of untapped Indie greatness.” Then after a year of touring, some shows they weren’t very proud of and verbally clashing with audience members, the band officially called it quits.
Pitchfork also posted that the band has recently launched a twitter account and a Soundcloud page, presumably to follow all future updates. Their first tweet is a photo Unicorns members Alden Penner and Nick Thorburn.
Back in 2004, the Unicorns put out their final release, an EP titled 2014. Coincidence? You be the judge.
According to Pitchfork, the band has no plans on touring outside the listed dates below with Arcade Fire and Dan Deacon.
