Ernest Greene, known by his stage name Washed Out, is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. His music career began when he started producing songs in his bedroom studio and working with a local band from his town. He recorded dance music, and shortly after won the favor of a number of influential music bloggers after they found his recordings on his Myspace page. His first recordings have been described as drowsy, distorted, dance pop-influenced tracks.
Washed Out’s style has been affiliated with genres like the chillwave movement. Ernest claims hip hop influences the way he writes his songs. His first two Washed Out EPs were released in 2009. He made his debut New York City performance at Santos Party House (his second performance ever). He has since performed at large music festivals including Pitchfork Music Festival, SXSW, Coachella, Lollapalooza, etc. His single “Feel it All Around” is the opening sequence of the TV show Portlandia.
In April 2011, Ernest signed to Sub Pop. His debut album, Within and Without, was released later that year. The album reached twenty-six on the U.S. BillBoard 200 and eighty-nine on the UK Albums Chart. Washed Out’s follow-up album, Paracosm, was released last year. The first single was “It All Feels Right,” followed by “Don’t Give Up.”
